Περιηγηθείτε στην ύπαιθρο και στους γύρω οικισμούς και γνωρίστε την τοπική παράδοση για την καλλιέργεια της γης, την εκτροφή των ζώων, τη θάλασσα, την αρχιτεκτονική. Σε όλη την έκταση του υγρότοπου, θα συναντήσετε πέτρινες μάντρες, λιθόγλυπτα που κοσμούν τα κτίσματα, κρήνες, ανεμόμυλους, αλώνια, ξωκλήσια, ενώ στην κατάλληλη εποχή θα έχετε την ευκαιρία να δείτε τους κατοίκους στην ύπαιθρο να ασκούν τις καθιερωμένες ασχολίες τους, σε μια πανδεσία χρωμάτων, διαφορετική για κάθε εποχή.Την άνοιξη, την ημέρα του Αγίου Γεωργίου, μη παραλείψετε να βρεθείτε στις ιπποδρομίες που γίνονται στο Κέρος με φόντο την πολύχρωμη φύση. Τον Ιούνιο, στο χρυσαφένιο τοπίο θα δείτε το θέρισμα και το αλώνισμα των σιτηρών. Τον Αύγουστο, θα δείτε μελισσοκόμους να συλλέγουν το μέλι από τις κυψέλες.  Τέλος Αυγούστου και αρχές Σεπτέμβρη, ξεκινήστε νωρίς το πρωί για την ολόλευκη Αλυκή, απολαύστε τα χρώματα της ανατολής και μαζέψτε αλάτι. Το Σεπτέμβριο θα δείτε τους αμπελώνες γεμάτους κόσμο από νωρίς το πρωί για τον τρύγο. Ακολουθεί η οινοποίηση σε παραδοσιακά πατητήρια ή στα οινοποιεία του νησιού, ενώ λίγο αργότερα τον Οκτώβριο, απολαύστε ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία της λαϊκής παράδοσης, την παραγωγή τσίπουρου στα λακαριά (μικρά παραδοσιακά αποστακτήρια). Το Φθινόπωρο προσφέρεται για περιήγηση και φωτογράφηση καθώς ο ουρανός είναι καθαρός και αποκτά καταπληκτικά χρώματα, ιδιαίτερα στο ηλιοβασίλεμα.

In June, amidst the golden landscape, you will see the harvest and threshing of cereals. In August you will see beekeepers collect the honey from the hives and stockbreeders dry the renowned "melichloro" (cheese) in the sun. At the end of August and the beginning of September make an early start to snow-white Alyki, relish the colours of the sunrise and collect salt. In September you will see vineyards full of people from early in the morning for the grape harvest. This is followed by winemaking at traditional wine-presses or the island’s wineries, while a little later, in October, you can enjoy one of the most interesting aspects of folklore tradition, the production of tsipouro at the "rakaria" (small traditional distilleries). At the village of Repanidi there are "linoi", jars carved inside the rock that were used for wine and tsipouro. Autumn lends itself for walking and taking photographs as the sky is clear and the colours are amazing, especially at sunset.

Moudros paves the way

Ο Δήμος Μούδρου εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια καταβάλλει συστηματικές προσπάθειες για την προστασία και ανάδειξη του περιβάλλοντος της ανατολικής Λήμνου και ειδικά των υγρότοπων, των χερσαίων και θαλάσσιων οικοσυστημάτων. Ο υγρότοπος Χορταρόλιμνης - Αλυκής ο οποίος εκτείνεται κατά μήκος της βορειοανατολικής ακτής, έχει χαρακτηριστεί σύμφωνα με την Οδηγία 79/409/ΕΟΚ «για τη διατήρηση των άγριων πτηνών», ως Ζώνη Ειδικής Προστασίας (SPA). Μετά την εκπόνηση Ειδικής Περιβαλλοντικής Μελέτης στο πλαίσιο του Επιχειρησιακού Προγράμματος «Περιβάλλον» το 2001, η οποία τεκμηρίωσε και αξιολόγησε τη σημασία του υγρότοπου διατυπώνοντας μέτρα προστασίας και διαχείρισης, η περιοχή προτάθηκε με τον κωδικό GR411001 για την ένταξη της στο δίκτυο ‘Natura 2000’ και χαρακτηρίστηκε ως Τόπος Κοινοτικού Ενδιαφέροντος (SCI). Πρόκειται για ένα συνεκτικό δίκτυο προστατευόμενων περιοχών που δημιουργείται βάσει της Οδηγίας 92/43/ΕΟΚ «για τη διατήρηση των φυσικών οικοτόπων καθώς και της άγριας πανίδας και χλωρίδας». Στο μέλλον αναμένεται η δημιουργία Φορέα Διαχείρισης. Οι αναπτυξιακές δραστηριότητες του Δήμου Μούδρου, πραγματοποιούνται μέχρι σήμερα στο πλαίσιο αυτής της προοπτικής, ωριμάζοντας τις συνθήκες για την εύρυθμη λειτουργία της περιοχής σύμφωνα με τις κατευθύνσεις της ΕΠΜ. Πρότυπα έργα αποτελούν η φυσική μονάδα επεξεργασίας λυμάτων του Ρουσσοπουλίου (ΙΝΤΕREG II-C) που βραβεύτηκε με βραβείο καινοτόμου οικολογικής πρακτικής, το Κέντρο Περιβαλλοντικής Ενημέρωσης της Καλλιόπης (ΕΠΠΕΡ) και το παρόν έργο. Το παρόν έργο περιλαμβάνει έργα προστασίας, διαχείρισης και αποκατάστασης ενδιαιτημάτων, έργα σήμανσης των προστατευόμενων ζωνών, έργα ερμηνείας περιβάλλοντος και διακίνησης επισκεπτών, πρόγραμμα παρακολούθησης (monitoring) παραμέτρων φυσικού - αβιοτικού περιβάλλοντος και απειλών στον υγρότοπο, που θα υλοποιηθεί με την προμήθεια του κατάλληλου εξοπλισμού καθώς επίσης και πρόγραμμα ενημέρωσης, δημοσιότητας, ευαισθητοποίησης για την προστατευόμενη περιοχή.

For a number of years the Municipality of Moudros has made a systematic effort to protect and promote the environment of eastern Limnos, and particularly the wetlands and the terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The wetland of Chortarolimni - Alyki, which stretches along the northeastern coast, has been designated a special protection area (SPA), according to Directive 79/409/EEC "on the conservation of wild birds". Following the Special Environmental Study that was carried out in the frame of the Operational Programme "Environment" in 2001 and documented and evaluated the significance of the wetland by formulating protection and management measures, it was proposed, under code GR411001, to incorporate the area in the "Natura 2000" network and it was designated a site of Community importance (SCI). It is a coherent network of protected areas that has been developed according to Directive 92/43/EEC "for the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora". In the future it is expected a Management Authority will be established. To this date, the development activities of the Municipality of Moudros are being carried out in the frame of this perspective, thereby preparing the conditions for the area’s smooth operation according to the directions set out in the Special Environmental Study. The natural sewage treatment plant at Roussopouli (INTERREG II), which was awarded a prize for innovative ecological practices, the Environmental Information Center at Kalliopi (Operational Programme "Environment) and the present project are model projects The present project includes actions on the protection, management and restoration of habitats, signposting of the protected areas, actions concerning the interpretation of the environment and the transportation of visitors, a programme for monitoring parameters of the natural - abiotic environment and threats to the wetland, which will be implemented through the use of suitable equipment, and also a programme for informing, publicising and raising awareness on the protected area.
